Why have a trademark licensing program?

Trademark licensing creates a cooperative and positive working relationship between the University, the manufacturers of approved and authorized products, and the retailers of these products. This assures that all merchandise bearing Michigan Tech trademarks promotes and protects the image of the University as well as fulfills the need of consumers wanting goods bearing Michigan Tech marks, symbols, and insignias. Licensing is also necessary to maintain the viability of Michigan Tech's trademarks.

Who needs to get their design approved?

Everyone - campus and University users as well as authorized licensed manufacturers. The use of the Michigan Tech name, logos, seals, and/or other symbols of Michigan Technological University in any commercial venture, even fund-raising or promotional activities, requires prior written approval from the Office of University Marketing and Communications. Approval is based not only on accuracy of the design but the representation it conveys.

How do I know if my vendor is licensed?

The Office of Technology and Economic Development maintains a list of currently licensed vendors. Vendors who are not currently licensed can become so by completing an application to become a licensed vendor and then executing a license agreement between them and Michigan Tech .

Who will need a license?

Any Producer of products bearing any University Marks must have a license before offering any goods for sale. Offering for sale includes a vendor offering merchandise for sale to Michigan Tech personnel or students for their own use. This includes promotional uses that are not intended for sale to the public or within Michigan Tech (although merchandise used for promotional purposes and not for sale is commonly exempt from royalties).

Where do license revenues go?

Licensed manufacturers pay the University a royalty on all products sold. Revenues are dedicated to enhancing the mission of the University. Programs supported through trademark revenues include the annual President's Convocation Scholarship Awards and the Student Leadership Awards Banquet conducted by the Dean of Students.

Are there any exemptions from royalties?

All items bearing the Michigan Technological University marks must be licensed. Exemptions from royalties are allowed for merchandise that is intended for internal use only, on a case-by-case basis. How can I tell if a product is licensed?

Look for the "Collegiate Licensed Product" label. Michigan Tech is a member of the Independent Labeling Group which uses the a label noting that merchandise is licensed. If a label or other notation indicating Collegiate Licensed Product is missing, it is not likely a licensed product.
